Soil stabilization on cut banks and fill slopes along BLM timber access and multiple use roads in the Nestucca River area received a big boost this spring by the Bureau of Land Management's acquisition of a seeder-mulcher. This machine sprays a thick slurry of wood fiber, fertilizer, grass seed, and water up to 75 feet. The wood-fiber slurry enables effective stabilization of steeper banks than is possible with broadcast seeding. During the last two years, BLM has seeded 26 miles of roadside in the Nestucca River area. In some cases foxglove and wild pea seed has been sown with the grass seed.
