1949-2-18 L.H.L. Carlton mill pond break 1.jpeg
February 24, 1949
WATER POURING THROUGH a breach in the dam of the LHL Lumber company log pond at Carlton this week-end virtually drained the large pond. The break, aggravated by an overheavy load of water in the pond, started at a small fish ladder Thursday evening. It was discovered at 8:30 p.m. by David Wagner, night watchman at the mill, through the simple expedient of falling into it on his way to work over the darkened causeway. At that time the break was only two feet wide but by Friday morning, the TR camera caught this flood of water pouring through the twisted timbers of the fish ladder as workmen sought to dam egress of the torrent. By Wednesday the water had torn away the timbers in the foreground and chewed the bank away to where the lumber carrier may be seen on one side and to where the workmen are gathered on the other. A piledriver is attempting to stem the flood. The mill is shut down.
