October 16, 1947

THE CARLTON STATE AND SAVINGS bank was robbed of $11,345 Friday at 10:05 by three masked men. Three suspects were later captured and nearly the entire amount stolen recovered by alert FBI agents and state police officers. The picture above was taken a few minutes after state police arrived on the scene. At extreme left is Harry Williams, Carlton resident, who was shoved aside by the trio of robbers as he started to enter the bank just as the holdup was taking place. He said one of the men was armed and they removed their masks as they rushed into their car parked in front of the bank with its engine running. Silas A. Hayes, also of Carlton, at left, was in the bank endorsing a check when the robbery took place. He said he did not even know the theft was occurring until told of it by one of the bank employee. Bank employee revealed that one of the men scooped the money into a qunny sack while the other two stood guard in the bank.
