Evoking queries from many local residents this week (“What is that thing anyway?”) is this attractive Toll Repeater Station owned by Pacific Northwest Bell located behind the Southern Pacific train depot, at 6th and Galloway. Built in 1960 for land cable, the station was recently remodeled and includes a new 60 foot tower built of weathering steel with a 10 foot microwave antenna dish. It will provide 60 additional telephone circuits from Portland to McMinnville’s General Telephone Company and other areas, expanding long-distance service and foreign exchange capability. “Tune-up” time will be about middle of May. The project is part of a $9.6 million microwave system in the state.
