Steel Products Now Rolling Out Of McMinnville Mill
Where do all the freight cars go? (and cars and other scrap, too?) is answered at McMinnville's new Cascade Steel RolIing Mills plant where selected No. 1 heavy steel scrap is sorted and cut up to size for the huge melt furnaces. The scrap, arriving by gondola cars moved with a unique power truck, is ready to feed the huge 20-ton electric furnace, top right. The plant, sixth largest mini-mill in the U.S., will have a second furnace in operation in about six weeks. A 100-member crew, expected to swell to about 125 people, will operate the 200,000 melting and rolling facility.
