Reported as “Very Successful,” especially for the first effort, was the surprise Civil Defense evacuation Thursday of Dayton grade and high schools. At the grade school, the building was cleared of more than 400 students, the school buses loaded and gone from the area in exactly six minutes. The high school was evacuated and the area cleared in 10 minutes. Assisting grade school principal Curtis Benefiel and high school head Don Miller was Bernie Nelson, county civil defense director. Above, grade school students are shown as they first streamed through an exit after the evacuation signal was sounded.
