February 14, 1957br/ br/THE THRILL OF A lifetime for third grade students at Adams school comes with a ride in Ralphbr/Wortmanrsquo;s 1901 Locomobile. Wortman took his early-day steam car to the school in conjunction with a study of transportation in a social studies class instructed by Mrs. Jim Lockett. The biggest thrill was a ride in the car for each of the 30 students in the class. The youngsters learned that Wortman's car was the first automobile to cross the Tillamook mountains under its own power and was responsible for a city ordinance in McMinnville in 1903 regulating the ldquo;reckless use of the horseless carriage.rdquo; Wortman told members of the class that he struck a dog belonging to a member of the council, prompting the legislation. It is believed to be the first law in the city, county or state regulating motor vehicle traffic. Taking their turns at a ride in the steam car with Wortman are Morey Hantz and Jerry Grabner
