NEW TURKEY HOME—-—This 300-foot long aluminum covered building just constructed on the P L Menefee turkey ranch near Yamhill will house some 1100 breeding birds this winter. The building, resembling a blimp hanger, is 40 feet wide and 20 feet high at the peak. Menefee last winter tried housing the birds and found that 30 percent on feed and labor was saved. If this large house works out, ten or 15 more will be built. Aluminum was chosen because it is believed to be cooler than other materials.
At right is the interior of the building. its cement floor will be covered with six inches of shavings. The steel posts and wire frames are removable and the interior may be readily cleaned with a hose. According to Ray Hill, hatchery superintendent. inside housed turkeys last year gave 75 percent hatchable eggs while birds outside averaged but 60 percent hatchable eggs. Standing in the building are Hill and County Agent Louie Gross. right. Automatic water fountains will be used.
