TONS OF WALNUTS pass through the Northwestern Nut Growers association cracking plant at Dundee which was observed by members of the Nut Growers Society of Oregon and Washington on a two-day tour August 13 and 14. The machine has a capacity of eight tons per day Over two million pounds have been cracked this year. Plant started operation in December and will complete this season's run in August or September. From 20 to 40 percent of the nuts are recovered as meats after cracking. The women at right are sorting meats from the cracker as they move by on belts. Four grades are selected here before going to salvage room.
