Linfield College physics students who stand night watches for Linfield Research Institute monitoring of a signal from the earth satellite Explorer, work with equipment at the college observatory where signals are received. Seated is Neil Davis, who made recordings. George LeCompte, at rear, shields light from an oscilloscope to trace a pattern from the recorded signal as Thomas Chow, left, helps with other controls. Tracking the explorer’s signal by LRI early Sunday was believed to be the first in the Northwest.
