1940-3 Sheriff George W. Manning with apple tree-1

1940-3 Sheriff George W. Manning with apple tree-1

1940-4-11, So mild has been Yamhill county's winter that this picture, taken last weekend on the government property near Lafayette Locks, shows apples of the 1939 crop still hanging to the tree, while in the background other trees are breaking into bloom. No frost of sufficient strength to harm the apples or snap them from the tree was encountered by the tree shown, with Sheriff George W. Manning, its discoverer, standing nearby with a handful of the fruit he pronounced "very palatable."
