TAPPING FOR MAPLE SYRUP——-There is more than one way to beat the sugar shortage legally as is demonstrated in the above picture by Mr. and Mrs. Frank Petrie of Fourth and Cowls streets, McMinnville. Commencing last Monday, the Petries began tapping the three giant native Oregon maples that stand in their front yard and boiling this sap down to a syrup. Success has crowned their efforts and the couple already are proud possessors of one and one-half gallons of genuine maple syurp. Passerbys have contributed their views on syrup making, and the project has aroused considerable interest among McMinnville residents. According to Petrie, 30 gallons of sap will boil down to slightly more than one gallon of syrup, of the proper taste and consistency. According to some experts, vine maple sap also can be used in syrup manufacturing.
The Petries were born and reared in the middle west and became familiar with the syrup making process in their childhood. Petrie, a cement contractor, has resided with his wife in McMinnville since 1936.
