Filbert Orchard, pulled out.jpeg

Filbert Orchard, pulled out.jpeg

April 24, 1947
FILBERTS PLOWED UNDER—The narrow margin of profit on filberts harvested last season plus uncertainity as to price levels in the future proved to be the final convincers in persuading E.E. Manning of Route 3, McMinnville, to pull out 10 acres of nine-year-old Barcelona nuts. Above picture shows Manning, left, discussing with Assistant County Agent Taylor the problem of conversion of the 10 acres into permanent pasture for his Grade A herd. Manning is presently in the process of
changing over to production of Grade A milk, and need for additional pasture first brought the tree-pulling move to mind. ln addition, Manning states that he is not too fond of the Barcelona nut having found as much as 10% “blanks” in one recent harvest. However, he is retaining for the time being four acres of 13 year-old Barcelona trees in another orchard.
