1939-8-10 Saddle Mountain Fire-2

1939-8-10, Flames Sweep Down From Saddle Mountain,
"Blind cabin, once a rendezvous for hunters and sportsmen, was in the path of the uncontrolled Saddle mountain fire which swept down into Yamhill county this week. Here is the cabin as it loomed up in the smoke ast eh fire circles in. Flames can be seen through the gateway, eating at underbrush in the background. A great black splotch in the timberlands of Washington, Yamhill and Tillamook counties is the result of the sweep of the Saddle mountain fire. From the best available sources the map shows the area covered by the flames. The giant fire break to head off the fire to the south and west was started from Meadow lake yesterday. Scenes like this were plentiful in Yamhill county forest lands this week as the Saddle Mountain blaze sliced across the northwestern end of the county. Traveling on the ground for the most part the fire ate through countless acres in this manner, defying attempts to bring it under control. The blaze today was spreading farther toward Tillamook to the west, toward the Siuslaw national forest on the south and down Turner creek in Yamhill county on the south. The dire ripped through the old 1933 Tillamook burn, reportedly traveling as fast as seven miles in an hour at some stages, then began to gnaw at virgin timber on the fronts to the south. More than 1000 men have been sent to the fire's scattered fronts in an attempt to bring it under control."
