1939-4-27, High Speed-A Sharp Curve,
"Excessive speed and a sharp curve contributed to the overturning of two cars near the St. Joe underpass early Thursday morning of last week. Both cars evidently hit the curve at excessive speed and while one righted itself after going far afield the other is shown lying on its side.
Not very long ago a woman was killed as a result of a head-on collision near the same spot and it would be difficult to enumerate the number of drivers who have come to grief on this tortuous piece of highway. It has been understood that this year, that they highway commission had this as one of the projects to be completed before the season ends.
Carrying as it does the tremendously heavy weekend coast traffic one wonders that there are not more accidents than there are inasmuch as drivers generally do not believe in signs that warn them of approaching curves and the necessity of slowing down. However, it would appear that any highway that earns as much gas tax per mile as this does something should be done about it to make it safe even for the careless. "
