Yamhill County People at Work
When the horse was the motive power for transportation, J. M. Williams conducted a livery stable at Yamhill.
As the automobile gradually took over the highways, he entered the new field and converted his livery stable into at garage and service station.
Thirty-seven years ago he bought the property on which his garage is now located. In his livery stable were the horses for the stage which ran to Tillamook. The large three—story hotel across the street in those days was well filled as travelers stopped over for at night's rest.
The automobile made heavy inroads in his business, and in 1921 he abandoned it and converted the stable into a garage. Last summer the old building was torn down and replaced with a modern structure.
Mr. Williams has been active in civic affairs. A number of years ago he served on the city council and was elected to it again ten years ago after a lapse of several years. He is now serving his third consecutive term. He is also a director and vice president of the Yamhill State bank.
