[March 28, 1957] A thorough inspection of cars which will be driven in the Mobilgas Safety-Economy run at McMinnville High School is made by members of the Tie-Rods. Here, three members of the group test a car which will be driven by Gordon Hall, third from left. Checking the car are Coy Howard, Dave Ryals and Bill Kizer. High school students participating in the run will drive a course of 98.8 miles through Salem and along the freeway, returning on Highway 99W. Scores are computed from gallons consumed for the given distance in relation to the weight of the car. Drivers are also assessed one-tenth of a gallon for each driver error. Cars will leave from Second and Adams streets at 9 a.m.
